Stannah continues to make life easier for retired couple in Staffordshire
At Stannah, we have been helping people remain in their own homes with the aid of stairlifts for over 45 years. We were recently pleased to find a very old stairlift, still in service, when we visited Mr & Mrs Northcote from Staffordshire.
Hugh, a retired headmaster, and his wife Hilary have been married for 45 years. The Northcote family set up an independent preparatory school back in 1936, an all boys school for 7-13 year olds. Hugh’s parents lived in the Heritage house within the school property and Hilary and Hugh have since retired here too.
Hugh coached cricket and rugby before retiring and they both still love to watch these sports as well as Formula 1.
The original stairlift was installed by Hugh’s parents in 1978 and when they moved into the property in 2010, Hilary and Hugh found it was a useful aid to get loads up and down the stairs. Overtime though, Hugh, suffering with COPD and arthritis has found coming down the stairs particularly challenging and so the stairlift has been a great help for him.
They were very happy with the old stairlift but after 42 years of service, it was becoming tricky for the Stannah engineers to guarantee it would keep on working effectively. So, for peace of mind, Hilary and Hugh made the decision to replace it with a newer model.
Choosing the classic Siena in a neutral ivory colour to blend in with their décor and to fit on their curved staircase, Hilary commented that its main benefit is that it makes life easier. With the handy powered swivel to aid getting off easily and safely at the top if the stairs, and the easy to use powered footrest that folds away without the need to bend down, using the stairlift is a doddle.
Hilary commented “The best thing about having the new stairlift is the confidence to know we can go upstairs easily. We also like the new design. Our advice to those struggling with the stairs is get a Stannah!”
